504 Plans

The rights of students with disabilities are protected by civil rights laws. A 504 plan is a plan designed for a student that takes into account their specific disabilities and then outlines the accommodations that that student will receive across their general education program. Accommodations may be physical, instructional, or social/emotional in nature. 

A qualified student with a disability is a student who:

1. has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; and 
2. has a record of such an impairment or is regarded as having such an impairment.

Often, students are referred to assessment for eligible for a 504 plan by the Student Success Team (SST)

Health Issues that can qualify a student for a 504 plan include, but are not limited to:

• ADHD
• Anxiety
• Arthritis, muscle, or orthopedic issues
• Asthma
• Cerebral Palsy
• Compromised immune system
• Diabetes
• Food allergies
• Seizure disorder

Accommodations vary greatly, depending on the needs of the individual student. 

Some examples of areas where accommodation might be used:

• Physical arrangement of and/or placement in a room
• During lessons
• Assignments
• Test taking
• Class assignment/daily schedule
• Organization and study skills
• Behavior management
• At home
