It seems that part of being a grown-up is saying, "Things will slow down next week," even though they almost never do. In the winter, days that are filled with co-ops, sports, dance lessons, and tutoring become even shorter, and opportunities for seasonal merriment abound. You can find your calendar filled with plays, recitals, ice-skating, and trips to the snow. However, wrapped up with the winter wonderment are also challenges like disrupted routines, sickness, cabin fever, and extra cheerful chaos. Hopefully, these ideas will help you keep your immune system strong and your heart happy.

Physical Wellness

Keeping everyone healthy in the winter can be quite a challenge. It can often feel impossible to keep everyone well at the same time! Here are some habits to keep your home a healthy one!

  • Take a Sunshine Break - As little as 10 minutes of sunlight can increase serotonin (the happy hormone), provide vitamin D, and help regulate our internal clock. Morning light is ideal, but any sunlight is better than none. Open curtains or blinds when you first wake up, read stories and do schoolwork near a window, and take a short walk even on cloudy days. Even 5-10 minutes outside can reset energy and help us focus.
  • Eat Immune-Boosting Food - Citrus, leafy greens, garlic, and ginger, as well as root vegetables, are in season and provide vitamins and minerals that benefit our immune systems. Soups are a delicious way to stay hydrated, consume nutrient-rich foods, and a fantastic opportunity for children to practice their kitchen skills.
  • Stay Hydrated - It can be hard to remember to hydrate in the winter months. Cold air is dry air, and our bodies focus on staying warm rather than staying hydrated. Tea during story time, broth as a snack, and water flavored with citrus and mint are delicious ways to increase our hydration.
  • Move Your Body - When it's cold, we can tend to bundle up and stay in one place.  Movement helps with focus and energy, and can even boost our immune systems. A playlist of your family's favorite songs for short dance parties, stretching breaks between subjects, and living-room yoga is a fun way to incorporate movement into our homeschool days.
  • Scrub with Soap - Singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" or reciting the alphabet ensures that little hands have been washed long enough. Bye bye winter germs!

Emotional Wellness

Like all seasons, winter requires balance. It's easy to overschedule ourselves this time of year - invites and events are plentiful, and before we know it, our calendars are overflowing. At the same time, cabin fever can set in during the days. Here are some ideas to help you stay balanced amongst the chaos.

  • Embrace a Slower Pace - Winter is the perfect time for cozy learning.  Literature-based learning, tea-time lessons, winter unit studies, and nature journaling help you slow down and enjoy the season.  Lessons at the library get you out of the house and offer a change of scenery. Audio books can be used to encourage quiet time, allowing everyone to reset.  Take short breaks; they promote focus and creativity.
  • Make Memories - You don't have to say "yes" to everything.  It's ok to pass on events and enjoy the coziness of home.  Baking, board-game days, library visits, and trips to the park to splash in the puddles can be just as memorable as elaborate outings.  Slow down and enjoy the memories you're making!

As you move through this season, remember that wellness doesn’t have to be complicated. Even in the shortest, coldest days, your body and spirit thrive when you prioritize sunshine, nourishing foods, and gentle movement. Step outside and feel the sun on your face, enjoy creating and savoring nutritious meals, and let your body stretch, walk, or dance whenever you can. These simple habits don’t just support your health, they help you savor the season with patience, connection, and joy.
