Clara Barrish with Assemblyman Rogers in Ukiah
Emily Stewart

This legislative season, a Sequoia Grove student, Clara Barrish, stepped up to advocate for her school community alongside her mother Erika Barrish. Even though Clara is only in second grade, she didn’t just watch from the sidelines—but took part in every step.

This past July, Clara traveled to Sacramento with her mom, where she learned firsthand how bills like AB 84 affect families and charters. She wrote letters to Governor Gavin Newsom, sharing why her school matters to those in her community. She shared how learning through charter schools impacts her, her friends with special needs, and even her karate sensei.

When Assemblymember Rogers held a coffee hour in Ukiah, Erika and Clara made sure to attend. Together, they talked about the importance of building relationships with representatives so they understand the families and students they serve. Clara even created a handmade card to thank Assemblymember Rogers for his work.

At the event, Clara stood out. When a campaign director asked about her lanyard full of pins, she proudly said she earned them by going to park days, field trips, and Adventure Academy classes. She said these are just some of the fun things students get to do at our schools. Clara also met a reporter from the Mendocino Voice, who took her picture with Assemblymember Rogers and asked if he could share her story.

Clara’s journey shows that advocacy is for everyone—no matter our age. By sharing her experiences and speaking up, she reminded leaders that education is personal, and every student’s story matters.
